The Spirit of the Kihap!

Beginners believe the kihap is simply a shout to frighten their opponent but it has a much more profound meaning and use.

The word “Kihap” is made of two words: “Ki” means inner power; “Hap” means to coordinate mind and body. This expression or shout, therefore, is a way of connecting with our inner strength and then physically manifesting it. It is a noise not generated in the throat, but something coming from a much deeper place, creating a tension or stimulation of the abdomen in the process.

Our actions come from our thoughts. When our thought is concentrated on a definite purpose we produce power. Adding feeling to that concentrated thought allows us to fully express that power. Through the kihap we express that feeling, augmenting our skill and manifesting power in its purest and most concentrated way.

I love this. I did not think about what Kihap meant. I have felt that my kihap was an expression to myself without understanding it. Reading this validates those feeling, as well as deepens the meaning.

Now I want to watch my thoughts and make sure I move through my entire day with purpose.

Thank you for bringing this to light. I enjoy this blog and each topic.

Another spirit of the air...

A noise that is one of the most base and guttural sounds we can make.

Transformed from the meaningless sound that it can be into the majestic and piercing, direct and external forces of Will.

A Kihap, delivered as an extension of the physical and mental intent, can feel as if it would split a mountain asunder.

Which although is quite fantastical, feels pretty damn good...

Rather than power that is felt, it is the co-ordination of Mind, Body, Self, Intent and Ki that provides the emotive satisfaction of MuShin.

I feel it bursting from my being and from my unconscious, channelled through me to become more than I could ever become without a sound ever being felt or heard.
